2015 is almost here and with it comes a new crop of horror movies. Some look like they will be great, others not so great. Last year’s horror fare was kind of a mixed bag. Some movies that were highly anticipated ended up being a disappointment, and others just fell into the mediocre category. There are a lot of remakes and reboots on the way which is great for fans but also calls into question whether or not horror writers are just running out of ideas. With the intense and popular horror dramas that are taking place on TV like American Horror Story and The Walking Dead drawing record audience ratings there is definitely an audience for some really great horror movies. The big question is will these movies, some of the most highly anticipated horror movies of 2015, draw the same audience numbers that the TV shows are drawing week after week?
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (March 2015)
The sixth installment in the record setting Paranormal Activity franchise returns to the saga of Katie and Hunter. The fifth film, The Marked Ones, was a bit of a disappointment because it seemed disjointed and out of place in the mythology of the franchise. Fans will be excited to go back to the original story and see a possibly possessed Katie once again wreaking havoc on a family. The family has been updated to seem like a totally modern family of an older mother with a younger husband who is a video game developer and a young daughter. Hopefully Paranormal Activity will return to the scares that made the franchise an instant hit six films ago.
Poltergeist (July 2015)
Fans have been divided about the reboot of one of the most well-loved horror movies of all time. The original film so perfectly captured a typical family in the 80s that fans are hesitant to see the movie redone. But, the new reboot has a modern setting and has enough changes from the original story that it should be able to scare modern audiences the same way the original film did. It will be interesting to see if the supposed curse that dogged the cast and crew of the original film also reappears on the reboot or if it was the original cast and crew who were cursed. If Poltergeist is done well it should be one of the most successful horror films of 2015.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (June 2015)
No list of 2015 horror movies would be complete without the third installment of the Insidious franchise. Insidious is one of the few modern horror movie franchises to really capture the imagination of audiences. The franchise is perfect blend of creepy, scary and compelling. Paranormal movies are always popular, so even though there are a lot of paranormal movies coming out in 2015 the third Insidious movie shouldn’t have any trouble connecting with fans. The movie will feature a new family and be telling a new story, which will breathe some new life into the original story.
Crimson Peak (October 2015)
Without a doubt one of the most anticipated movies of 2015 is Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. The fantasy and horror master wrote and directed the film. It’s a Gothic horror tale set in England where a young bride discovers that her beloved husband is really a monster. The cast includes fan favorite Tom Hiddleston as the monstrous husband, Sons of Anarchy heartthrob Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. The film should be filled with the lush visuals that del Toro is famous for and have the kind of intensity and slow building horror that makes for a fantastic classic style horror tale.
Victor Frankenstein (October 2015)
Also coming out just in time for Halloween is a modern reboot of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tale. This film tells the classic story with a modern setting and modern aesthetic. The film could be great, or it could be terrible. Fans are hopeful that it will gracefully take the time honored Frankenstein tale and give it some modern polish. Notably the film stars Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe as Igor, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant.
