purgeEven though the critics had mixed opinions on the dystopian film The Purge audiences loved it. It had a very respectable box office take both domestically and internationally. The move did well enough and was popular enough that The Purge 2 is in development now to give audiences another chance to experience what might be part of the future.

The unique premise of The Purge is one that is frightening because it doesn’t take a huge leap of imagination to see it becoming a reality. In The Purge the year is 2050 and the US is being run by a hard core political group similar to some of the ultra-Conservative fringe groups that exist today. As a way of curbing the high crime rate the government instituted an annual event called The Purge. The Purge lasts for 12 hours the country is allowed to descend into anarchy.

All government run protection agencies like the police and fire departments are shut down. Hospitals are also shut down. For that 12 hour period all crime is legal and will never be punished. People can rape, rob, even murder people and never face any consequences for their actions. However, anyone who goes out during The Purge intent on committing crimes may be murdered or assaulted themselves. The only rule is that people can’t use large scale weapons like explosives, bio weapons, and other military-style weapons.

The story of The Purge centers on a…

Devil’s Due Delivers a Modern Version of a Classic Horror Film Premise

Devil’s Due, a new horror movie that was recently released, is an average film that tries to put a modern twist on a horror movie premise that fans are very familiar with. The film takes the same premise used in films from Rosemary’s Baby all the way to Paranormal Activity. The film is about a woman who unknowingly is carrying a demonic child that the Devil is supposed to come and take once it is born. Like in Rosemary’s Baby the woman is impregnated during a Satanic ritual that she is unaware of. But Devil’s Due adds a modern filmmaking twist to this premise by telling the story in a “found footage” format.

In the beginning of the film audiences see Zach being interrogated by police. He is bloody but insisting that he is innocent. As the interrogation continues the story unfolds. Zach and his new bride Samantha travel to the Dominican Republic for a honeymoon. While they are out at an appropriately creepy nightclub celebrating their marriage they are drugged and Samantha is made to undergo a dark ritual where she becomes pregnant with a demonic child. At the time of course she doesn’t know the child isn’t a normal child. Bewildered at the speed at which she got pregnant but happy they announce the impending birth to their families. The home movies that are used…

Paranormal Activity is one of the most successful horror franchises in history. Now the popular film series is upping the ante by releasing two films in 2014. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones hits theaters in January of 2014. Even though The Marked Ones is technically the fifth sequel to the original Paranormal Activity film it doesn’t have the official “5” title. That is reserved for a film that will debut around Halloween in 2014. Paranormal Activity 5 will feature more of the characters that fans know from the original film like Katie, the lead character.

themarkedonesParanormal Activity: The Marked Ones is a very different from any other film in the franchise. The story is set in a Latino community in Oxnard, CA. The main character has no connection to Katie or her sister Kristi and it isn’t until the main character finds a box of tapes that contains tapes of Kristi and Katie that fans will start to see where the original story connects to this one. The end of The Marked Ones also ties the story to the upcoming Paranormal Activity 5 film. That sets the stage for 5 to be released later in the year.

Even though The Marked Ones is only loosely tied to the original story it uses a lot of the same gimmicks that the other films have used to portray the demon. There are the same bite marks, the same ability to…

Insidious-2Insidious 2, the sequel to one of the scariest movie of 2011, Insidious, was released to great reviews in 2013. Fans and critics embraced the sequel to the original film calling it a creative and terrifying continuation of the original story. Unlike some horror franchises that rely on episodic stories to keep putting out new films Insidious follows one particular family and their battles with evil ghosts and other paranormal activities that throw their lives into chaos and threaten their son.

The paranormal horror genre is a really tough genre for filmmakers to be successful in because there is such a huge number of films in the genre. But really well done and innovative films like Insidious and Insidious 2 stand out as some of the best films in the genre in recent years. The use of clever film edits and a generally dark look to keep viewers off balance throughout the film really helps make the movie scarier and more disturbing for audiences.

It’s really not a surprise that Insidious and Insidious 2 were successful considering the talent that worked on them. Both films were created and produced by the teams that were responsible for record setting horror franchises SAW and Paranormal Activity.  The director of Insidious and Insidious 2, James Wan, also had a smash hit with The Conjuring. The Conjuring is also now a franchise with sequels planned and in production.

twd-gameThe Walking Dead videogame by Telltale Games has been nearly as successful as The Walking Dead TV show has been. In fact many people who are not fans of the TV show love the game. They feel that the game is more authentic to the spirit of the graphic novels that the show and game are based on. Robert Kirkman was heavily involved in the design of the game so it feels very much like a Robert Kirkman graphic novel. The characters in the game are different from the characters in the novels or in the TV show. Only three of the characters who were featured in the graphic novels are in the game: Glen Rhee, Hershel Greene, and a lesser known member of the Greene family.

The Walking Dead game has won dozens of awards and is one of the most popular video games on record.  More than 8.5 million people have played at least one episode of the game. The game also has won more than 90 “Game of the Year” awards from both gaming media and mainstream media like USA Today.

The game is credited with reviving a type of video game that had nearly gone extinct, adventure games. If you were a child in the 80s you probably read “choose your own adventure” books where you would read a book and at a critical point you could choose what the characters did next. If you…

Over the course of three and a half seasons The Walking Dead has gathered an immense number of fans. It’s not really a surprise that the first ever zombie con would be started by two die-hard fans of The Walking Dead. James Frazier and Eric Nordhoff are the Walker Stalkers, two fans of the show from Nashville TN. They originally started by hosting a twice weekly podcast to discuss the episodes of The Walking Dead. The pair built a large audience of listeners and fans on Twitter and through their website. But after getting a chance to tour the set and interact with some of the stars of the show they wanted to do something bigger. Something for other mega fans like themselves.

Even though other cons like Comic-Con do embrace some horror genre shows and graphic novels like The Walking Dead that wasn’t enough for the Walker Stalkers. They envisioned a con based just on zombies and The Walking Dead. They turned to Kickstarter to see if they would be able to get the funding and support necessary to create a zombie con. Walker Stalker Con was created by the fans and for the fans of The Walking Dead and other classic zombie films and media.

In honor of The Walking Dead the duo selected Atlanta GA as the place to hold the Walker Stalker Con. The Walker Stalkers used their podcasts and connections to start lining up…
